Brutal, Beautiful, and Unforgettable: The 2025 MXGP of Flanders in Lommel, Belgium

Every year, the world’s best motocross riders descend on a sleepy Belgian town to tackle one of the most punishing and iconic tracks in the sport. The 2025 MXGP of Flanders in Lommel once again proved why it's considered the spiritual home of sand motocross. Deep ruts, shifting lines, and raw endurance pushed the elite of MXGP and MX2 to their absolute limits. And as always, Lommel delivered a weekend of drama, passion, and world-class racing.

The Sand Beast: Lommel’s Legendary Status

Lommel is no ordinary motocross circuit. Nicknamed the “sand beast,” its bottomless surface creates a constantly changing battlefield that tests fitness, mental strength, and technique like nowhere else on the calendar. No other track demands so much from riders — and punishes so quickly when mistakes are made.

By midday Sunday, the track was a warzone of braking bumps and endless whoops. And for the fans? A gladiatorial spectacle unlike any other.

The MXGP Class – Febvre vs. Coenen

The premier class didn’t disappoint. Romain Febvre, the current points leader, brought consistency and speed to Lommel, clinching the overall with a 2-1 moto finish. But the star of the weekend may well have been Lucas Coenen. Racing in front of his home crowd for the first time as a full MXGP rider, Coenen lit up the track with a dominant first moto win and a hard-fought podium in moto two.

With Jeffrey Herlings returning from injury and flashing moments of brilliance, the championship fight remains wide open as the series heads toward Sweden.

MX2 – Sand Masters Duel in the Desert

In MX2, it was a fierce three-way showdown between Kay de Wolf, Simon Längenfelder, and Andrea Adamo. De Wolf, a known sand specialist, proved why he’s one of the best in these conditions. After a tough start in moto one, he rebounded in moto two to claim the race and the overall win.

Längenfelder’s technical prowess kept him on the podium, while Adamo managed to salvage a top-five despite struggling in the rough conditions. With only a few rounds left, MX2 is shaping up to be one of the tightest title races in recent memory.

Electric Atmosphere & FMX Thrills

Spectators were treated to more than just GP action. The Monster Energy FMX show kept the crowd buzzing between motos with wild freestyle stunts. Free paddock access gave fans the chance to rub shoulders with the riders and peek behind the curtain at the high-stakes world of pro motocross.

The Belgian fans turned out in full force — flares, flags, and chants echoing around the circuit from early morning until the final checkered flag. With kids under seven admitted free and affordable tickets, it was a family-friendly weekend with unforgettable action for all.

Looking Ahead

As the MXGP caravan moves on from Lommel toward Sweden and the Netherlands, the season’s endgame is beginning to take shape. Febvre’s lead is narrowing, Herlings is hungry, and Coenen may be peaking at just the right time. In MX2, a single mistake could separate champion from runner-up.

But no matter who takes the title come October, Lommel 2025 will go down as one of the defining races of the year — a perfect blend of brutality and brilliance.
